ICT world

When I was little, my toys were just a soft dolly, papers and rubber bands. Don't know what toys do Chavela's children play in the future?

  1. Toys may change but two things don't - how gorgeous little children are and how curious little children are. I love tese photos.
This reminds me of my moko who is 21 months old. When she comes to my house she points to my lap top and says "Wiggles." She already knows that she can access her favourite songs and programmes via the net. What interests me is that she doesn't go to the TV for this, she already knows that her favourites are on TV sometimes, but they are available on the net anytime. Amazing!

  2. Kia ora everyone,

I totally agree with Glorious Girl (I think it is Ange, sorry if it is not, it just sounds like her)with the fact that children are beautiful and a blessing for all of us to have and to be able to work with.
It is interesting to note that we had few PDs where facilitators were trying their best to move us away from perciving children as cute anymore but rather to see them as confident and capable learners. I agree with this but to a certain degree as I believe children need to be children and seeing them as cute and loveable is what drive us and attract us to be around them.
In regard to what our children's children will be playing with, I guess they will devices that will take them anywhere they want and they probably don't need to 'physically' visit theme parks after all!
Technology is important to us and children but let's not forget the most important thing to have quality interactions with those children as these are the meaningful experiences children will remmember forever.
I agree with the Maori whakatauki that states: "He aha te mea nui? He tangata, He tangata,He tangata."
What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people.

  3. Kia Ora, I agree totally, that children are most precious and beautifull, however I also feel concerned at the rate technology is taking over our daily lives and that of children's. I remember when I got together with my cousins or went visiting, we use to talk to each other, play fun games, like hide and seek(don't laugh, it was fun). Nowadays when I go visiting children are texting, listening to music on their MP3 players, etc.)Technology has also impacted on parenting nowadays, instead of reminding children to wash their hands we're reminding them not to text at the diner table. People are important, let this be the compass that guides our daily lives.

  4. Love the photos :) It is amazing the things that children understand and the technology that they are capable of using these days. I remember getting our first computer when I was about 5 or 6 and I learnt how to use it straight away. Some of the children in my centre bring in transformer toys that take the staff about 20 minutes to put together, yet they can do it in about 30 seconds! I will be amazed to see what new toys come out in the future for when I have children. They already have cameras and laptops for children. Who knows maybe there will be a fully equiped kitchen where children can cook proper meals :) wouldn't that be awesome?

  5. I found it interesting what Mel said about what she use to play with when she was little because I have similar memories of making mud pies and other concoctions, riding my bike to the park, meeting up with my friends, and playing bull rush with my cousins all outdoor activities. It wasn’t till I was about 12 till I played on a computer; My 7 year old son however is already hugely computer literate he knows how to search on the internet and how to use it to find information and knowledge. We Skype my sister regularly in Sydney and he is able to see and speak to his cousins so in my opinion technology definably makes our lives easier and more effective However sometimes I worry that too much technology takes away from having real life experiences!

  6. Love the pics Mel! I see you let the kiddies play with your brand new ipad!!!! I hope you are enjoying it as much as Chavela looks like she is. So now finally got my head around this blogging thing and as much as I am learning about blogs I find I am learning more about what is technology and how we can use it in our everyday life. I tended to think technology was electrical eg computers, cameras, phones etc but realise it is much more than that. My own children, who are in primary school, do all their homework on the computer now and google information, speak by txt and exercise by Wii. But at what cost? Like you, my toys were the mud pies and playing outside. I had one doll all my childhood and remember mum always telling us to go play outside as it could be raining tomorrow! My childhood was fantastic but when I look at what my kids play with, will their childhood memories be so fondly remembered? I am not saying that technology is bad but there has to be a balance. These school holidays the computer, tv, wii etc was banned and my children had to organise friends to come over and play outside (thankfully it was sunny most the hols!)And they did and had lots of fun just like the old days. Although we did sneak to the movies once or twice! I firmly believe that the phrase "everything in moderation" is a good one and one that brings balance into your life. Technology is everywhere and is progressing at rapid rate, we cannot escape from it, and need to be aware of technology to keep up in this world, but we need to be aware of the effect it has on our well-being. Now as holidays are over, the computers, phones, facebook, txt, emails is back and in full swing and couldn't do without them for very long but I look forward to the next holidays when I can welcome a hard earned break and go back to playing outside!

  7. Thinking back to my childhood, I was raised in an environment where totally there was slow analogy learning and a different education system. This could be because of the differences of cultural background and generation gaps. However over the past ten years there were tremendous development in technology all over the world. I never imagined that technology, especially ICT, to develop this rapidly and today we face the world with a well developed technology. In the future, i guarantee that I will work with children that will have a better knowledge of technology than I. As a teacher, learning and sharing with the children, will be a new challenge for me.

  8. I believe technology is getting our children very fast and we as parents are slow in catching at times.Children are the gifted people and as their grow, learn and develop their life is changing with modern technology.Comparing this with children 25-30 years back ,maths for example was more of mental ,long calculationsand a tiring exercise and now taken over by sofistictaed calculators, mobiles and computers.Modern technology has costs parents lots and is there a choice for them.definetely we want our children to be exposed to the world, with people ,places and thingsand develop to be confident and competent. This technology will pose a challenge to the teachers and opens an avenue for learning with the children.

  9. Wow! beautiful pictures there Melanie.
Hello everyone, I've been reading your comments and it's amazing and frightened at the same time of how technology can impact our relatioships with the children I guess. My four years old daughter knows how to play games on my computer. So thats mean, she spend more time with the computer than us parents and her sisters. I mean, we should think of our children first. Ofcourse we can't stop them from excessing the technology but we can at least add other materials like books, take them out for a walk or something that can bring us close together. Otherwise, they wont use their mine at all..computer and ipod and so on will control them.
    cheers

  10. Hi Mel, It is interesting what you said about the toy that you use to play when you were young. At least you had a soft dolly, my mum gave me a ball was made out of flax and I love it. It did not cost her any cents. I did not have any chance to learn about a computer at the time. Now I am a mother of four and see all my children spend most of their times on computers, texting, playing games on line. I think it is important for our children to learn about technology but I worry that too much technology might takes away their real life experience

  11. I have to agree with most of the class mates, technology and its aspects are growing day by day. There is so much technology nowadays, that we as early childhood teachers need to keep us up to day in order to pass this knowledge and learning experiences on to our tamariki. I believe that when it comes to technology, we as educators need to first look at how much the children already know from the exposure that they get especially from media. But one other thing that I would like to emphasis on is that the fact that sometimes we have to look at what is good for the children and what not so good and draw that line. At my centre at the moment I have set up time limits for each child to go on the computer and have had to stop DVDs from coming to the centre in order for the children to grow holisitically rather than have limited knowledge and not just rely on technology.

  12. Hi Mel
Love the photos of your little girl Chavela. She looks really comfortable working the ipad I wish I had one! Since doing the blogs I have come to realize how much technology is in my life and that of my sons which I took for granted. I remember when we got computers in our school we had six computers to share amongst the whole primary school and had 1hr lessons once a week. Now in my 6 and 8 year olds classes they have got four computers which they have access to during their school day and in our home we have a computer and a laptop which we all use at least once a day.

I feel that it is important for children to have access to technology however I do not feel that that technology should rule their learning and development for example used as a babysitter combining the both works well.

  13. I wonder if facebook and blogging is still available when your daughter will grow up.Now that she is little, she can play with the i pad. I wonder too what are they playing in the future. We used to connect tin cans with a string to used as our telephones. We did not even have electricity in our island when I was young. I survived the technology free time and was playing the natural things around me and gives me very nice memories from my beautiful island.

  14. Hi Mel, great photos. It just goes to show how our children are becoming more aware of the technology that is available to us now. Like most of my class mates i also was making all sorts of interesting meals for my dolls to eat, such as mud pie and using my mums garlic crusher to make spaghetti using the soap in the bathroom. I also agree that it is important for children to learn about technology because technology and children are our future

  15. toya are constantly changing and developing with the current world. toys that i had when i was young are nothing compared to what my four year old niece plays with today. she already has her own laptop, and the ironic thing is that she got it at the same time as i got mine, just a 19 year age gap.
it will be interesting to see what our kids kids are playing with in the future, as we are constantly providing them with new interesting materials.

  16. Beautiful Little
girl....Your right! I can remember playing with dolls and simple toys..or at least they seemed simple now. My children are far more advanced than i was at their age...when the computer breaks down i have to get my son to help sort it out. it is nothing for my 3 yr old to play games on the lap top or on our mobile phone. However in the weekend we brough a simple matching game which she has been bugging everyone to play. She is very good and often beats everyone even when we're not trying to let her win.

  17. Hi Mel...cute photos. I thought it is you:-)Well I used to play with simple toys too but those were past days. Nowadays the advanced technology plays major role in everybodies lives. For example emails. I remember when I was thirteen, I used to write HAND WRITTEN LETTERS to my best friend but these days emails work best. As technology is widely used these days, I believe children should be given as much opportunity to experiment and explore as they will have to cope with such technology later in their lives.

  18. Love the pictures Mel, and you remind me of our days when we had more natural things to play with such as pebbles, sticks and leaves. However we do have to keep up with technology as it is the reality of today and exposing children to it is as important. What is more interesting is that we now allow children to freely explore these as we understand how important this is for children's learning but back in our days it was a no, no for children, which is now the other way around and children are leading us.
