Thoughts from the Netsafe's workshop on 8 Sept

Hi all

I have learnt something from the workshop yesterday. I have found that there were some risks / issues within internet safety which I have never thought before.

In the reality, we have no choice to choose whether we use or don't use technology and ICT as these things are part of our daily lives. I very agreed with Nancy said that ICT is to support learning and teaching.

What do you think about the workshop yesterday?

Have you got an incident book in your centre?

Do you think you are a good cybercitizen?

Please share...

Mel

P.S. After your semester break, we will start looking at 'social sciences'

  1. I did learn alot. There were some scenarios and dangers that I hadn't thought about especially pertaining to the sotrage of information.
Our centre has a very good set up for our computers. Teachers have three computers for their use. We all have our own user names nad passwords and we can only access two servers on our system. One server manages photos and the other manages our learning stories. We can also access the internet otherwise all other information can only be accessed by the manager and administrator.
We have a computer safe policy adn had to sign a user agreement. Accessing inappropriate material can result in the termination of our employment.

I really liked the positive and balanced approach and the useful resources and support offered. I will definitely be using Hector's page with our children.

  2. I found it really interesting that there are so many risks to all types of technology. Something like a digital camera which I thought would not be unsafe, can actually be unsafe depending on where the photos end up after they have been taken. This class made me think about what risks we need to minimise for children when we introduce them to new aspects of technology. At my centre we do not have an incident book that I am aware of. The older children at my centre have a computer with educational games on it which help with spelling, letter recognition and math skills. However they do not have access to the internet, which means they are not at risk of internet dangers, but they also may be missing out on important information and skills that the internet could provide. I am currently advocating for internet for our children along with some other staff members at my centre, but as yet no luck. I am sure that after this class I would be able to keep children safe and informed on the internet if need be.

  3. I also gained a lot of information from the afternoon. There are many more risks involved with technology than I had thought about. I have installed Hector on our home computer and shown my daughter how and when to use it. I have also shared it with the senior's teachers at our centre. We all have individual laptops at work with our own usernames and passwords. There is no incident book at work, but I beleive that we should have one. It is in the best interest of the staff.

  4. Wow, what a session. I just had no idea that technology carried so many risks. I have taken the information that we received in class back to my centre and we would now be looking at updating the way we use our computers at the centre as we do not have a system in place where we record who has been on the computer, The children at my centre do have a computer for their own use, which is loaded with games that help enhance some of their curricular skills for example their maths and language skills. I do think that it is important for children to have access to internet as there are lots of answers that we as teachers do not have on hand, but with the aid of the internet we are able to relay the answers to the questions that have intrigued the children, After the netsafe session, I hope to create a more cybersafe environment at my centre.

  5. It really got me thinking about internet safety and about the risks associated with our technologys even though we don't have a computer for our children in the centre. I passed the idea of hector on to my young nieces for their safety. I have always been aware of the risks associated with tecnologies but the class session made it alot more real.

  6. It was really an interesting session as I gained some knowledge and got lots of information about the risks involved with technology. The information about internet safety for children made me aware of children using computer in my centre and even at my home. ICT really supports learning and teaching like games and mathematics skills but we as educators need to keep safe environment for our children at all times.

  7. Its so easy to ignore the internet and its implications especially when you feel that you are out your depth a little. Is is great to be reminded that even though we think what we write is only between you and that person it is attended for, without the correct security and understanding its importance, it can land you in big trouble and expose children to unwanted predators

  8. I really enjoyed learning about Netsafe and was well informed about the risks involved in technology. I brought the netsafe booklet into my centre and put it in our parent library and have had positive feedback on how families are using hector's world at home.

  9. hey mel,

I learnt alot from that workshop!
Everything they discussed I linked it back to my home centre and became more aware at the risks behind the new evolving technology!
We have a incident report booklet but I never knew how important it is too write down every little issue, because people have lost their jobs over such little things being blamed on them.
I think with children it is very importantthat they are exposed to todays technology, and things on the net, but I beleive that the amount they see needs to be CLOSELY monitored! because one slip up, or one wrong page or image opened and there could be big concequences behind them!!
this workshop has opened my eyes to these issues!! and I will definately inform parents and whanau about Hector World i think it is fantastic.

  10. Very interesting and informative session. we learnt so much and about things that we never thought of before. It has made us more aware of the risks assiciated with technology and at the same time given us ideas as how to manage them. Hector's world is something that I feel we need to not only use in our centres but also inform parents/whanau about as it is so useful.

  11. Prior to attending the cybersafety workshop, I knew there were risks and issues around internet safety. But I found it quite interesting that after weighing up the advantages and disadvantages or technological equipments that there is quite a balance on most of the points I came up with. For example, the use of mobile phones for sending instant text messages to families/whanau and friends. I found out that its advantages included getting your message across in a fast pace and the disadvantages included getting unwanted text messages.

I really think that having the workshop benefited me as an individual and it would be a great idea to share the experience and knowledge I gained from the workshop with my work colleague as well as our families/whanau.

We do have an incident book in our centre that shows specific internet sites that we as employees won't access for the safety of ourselves as well as our centre as a whole. Recently, our employees had to sign a document that shows we will not be posting anything on facebook and similar websites that would bring down the representation of ourselves as employees as well as our centre as a whole.
